![]() One of the most common of all facial plastic surgery procedures is nasal surgery or Rhinoplasty. Over half a million people each year seek consultation about improving the appearance and/or function of their nose. Many people are unhappy with the natural shape or size of the nose they were born with while others may have suffered a deforming injury, or just want to relieve breathing problems. Nasal surgery can reduce or increase the size of your nose. It can change the shape of the bridge, tip, or span of the nostrils and it can change the spatial relationship between the nose and the upper lip. Some people may consider facial implants (such as chin augmentation) at the same time to help balance facial features for an overall more desirable effect. While there is no perfect nose, with realistic expectations and good communication between you and the doctor, reshaping your nose can have a dramatic effect on your appearance which can enhance self confidence, and in some cases, health. Rhinoplasty is usually done on an outpatient basis, under sedation analgesia or general anesthesia and takes about one to two hours longer if other procedures are being done at the same time. There might be discomfort after the surgery which can be handled with the medication prescribed by the doctor and cold compresses. Pain or discomfort usually subsides in a couple of days. After the surgery most patients will have a splint and dressing placed on the nose to protect and stabilize the area. You can expect swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose which generally fades within a week. Most patients feel and look good enough to return to work in one to two weeks. Patients are required to have someone drive them home from the procedure and it is recommended that someone be around the first 24 hours for assistance. Plan limited activity for the first few days. It is very important to follow your doctors instructions carefully to obtain the greatest benefit from your surgery. Expect to achieve significant results in about a month with final results taking up to a year. |
